Goodbye Granny

My 85-year-old granny was admitted into the hospital when she couldn't be awaken from sleep in the morning of last weekend. She was in a coma for 2 full days at the hospital until the conditions worsened and my parents were informed by the authorities. All relatives were summoned to the hospital for one last look at granny. On Monday morning just a few days ago, she passed away peacefully around 6-ish am.

Granny had been complaining of pain and short of breath for a very long time. She was hard to hear and was always out of breath. She had also been expressing every so often that she wanted to leave this place for good. I guess she had already lost her will to live when grandpa passed away last year. It has only been 10 months since and granny couldn't wait any longer to join him.

We held a one-night wake at the Kong Tung funeral parlour with Christian proceedings. We had the pastor from Calvary Church heading the funeral ceremony with prayers and songs of praise.

My heart feels heavy even as I am writing about my grandparents now but this is how life is. God gave us life, and one day, it will be taken - back to Him, to a place where there is no more sufferings.

This is one of a handful of photos I have of granny. Thankfully, there were a few more taken at my wedding. And a few days before she fell into a coma, she has passed on a strand of rice pearl necklace for my keepsake.

Rest in peace, por por. I love you and will miss you. Don't forget to bless me with many generations down this path.

And those were the last words I whispered just before her coffin descended to the ground for cremation.

Ashes to ashes
Dust to dust
And from hereon
The family saga ends
At last!

Goodbye Gramps

My 88-year-old grandpa was admitted into the hospital under critical conditions yesterday morning. Last night, he passed away peacefully around 11-ish at night and we were contacted and informed at around 1-ish this morning.

Exactly a year ago, grandpa had a fall. Granny said that he fell on the 1st day of the 7th month in the Chinese lunar calendar (which is the start of the Ghost Month). And tomorrow is the 1st day of the 7th month. At this ripe old age, granny said that grandpa is better off in heaven. "Lungs full of germs," she continued. "Better let him go and end his suffering."

We paid our last respects at HUKM's morgue today. Grandpa had a nice cream coloured suit on, with a reddish tie, ready to be transported to the crematorium. I laid my hands lightly on his. Felt cold to my touch. Mum asked us to say a few words to grandpa. "He'll hear us," she said. "His soul is still around. C'mon...last few words," mum persuaded lightly.

Do not be saddened. It is probably better off this way where there is no more suffering. He's now off to a better place, most probably engaging in his favourite pastime, pok kiau (means gambling in hokkien). *giggle*

I don't have many photos with grandpa. This was taken 2 years ago. He is always cheerful and funny, makes me laugh in his clumsy ways.

Rest in peace, kong kong. I love you and will miss you.

And those were the last words I whispered to him.

Kaya

I was hungry. I eyed a loaf of wheatgerm bread on top of the fridge. I reached out for a slice. I opened the fridge to scout for some marmalade or better still, hotdog or corn beef when my eye caught sight of kaya*. I love kaya, especially the Gardenia's Auntie Rosie which comes in Pandan flavour or Original. I spread a thick layer onto my slice of bread and sank my teeth into it. Suddenly, my throat knotted. I couldn't seem to swallow that supposedly delicious bite.

This particular kaya is also my grandpa's favourite. He never fails to buy 2 jars every week. He must have forgotten to bring it along. He must be missing it. He must have left it behind for me.

I must be missing him.

Kaya* means "rich" in Malay. Main ingredients are eggs and coconut milk, stirred continuously for hours into paste-like texture. Very "rich" and creamy.

Coconut milk is quite calorific. As for me I am trying to avoid it, but mostly because of its smell. I do not know why but it irritates me a lot. Though I add coconut oil to the creams me and my wife use.

Bitter

I feel bitter. We feel bitter. But what can we do when the matter is between two generations before us?

When they were around, they were stubborn. They do things their way. They irritate in one way or another. But compared to others of the same generation, they are almost obedient. They are capable. They can be independent.

However, she has her reasons for doing what she did to them. She has all the reasons she thought makes it valid for her actions. She wants to think that she is not to be blamed. She wants to think that it's a blessing in disguise.

I guess we weren't brought up to be able to accept whatever that has happened. As much as we disagree, what's done is done. Being the ones caught in between, we can only do our best to ease the situation, whatever our best can be for as long as whatever's left of it.

No one will ever understand the history behind the generations. I don't think it will ever be uncurtained. As much as we tried to understand the facts, a lot of the truth will be shaded but shrouded.

We still feel bitter, with welled up tears but sigh...if this is how she wants things to be, there's nothing more we can do. As someone said once, we have to let things we can't change go or it will eat us up inside.

Big eye queen

And I'm referring to the queen of the house - my mum.

I walked into the living room. Million was hovering around my legs and prancing up my knees. I hastened my pace and stepped up to the lounge. I unlatched my work bag from my arms with a soft thud on the table. I removed my pair of pearl earrings and my watch from my left wrist. Million, who was sniffing and licking my toes, was seeking my attention. I was ready to carry and shower him with some love and care when my mum stepped up to the lounge in less than five steps to join me at the table.

"Eh, look at these tour packages," she said in an excited voice, showing me different leaflets which she has very neatly arranged on the table for my reference.

I made a quick glance. "Ok. So which is which and how much?" I asked, pointing to one of the leaflets.

"Oh this is from this tour agency and it's this much," she offered.
She continued offering information. "This is from another and it's this much. This covers this place. That covers that."

"Ok. So this X agency which we asked about previously is offering this?"

"Tsk! You not listening! When did I show you the leaflet from X agency?"

"I saw you write the name here. See?" I said, pointing to some scribbles on a particular leaflet and feeling a little upset that she raised her voice at me.

"No, I said this is from this tour agency and it's this much," she repeated in a huff.

I sensed a hint of frustration. "Ok. So is the price better than X agency?" I asked calmly.

"Tsk! You not listening! I don't have the information from X agency. You want it, you go get it yourself! As if I would go there to get it!"

"Look mum. I just came home from work, I'm tired and all I want is just a hot shower and some rest. We'll talk about this tomorrow, ok?"

I didn't want to continue the conversation. I moved away from the table, scooped Million up into my arms and played with him on the sofa in the living room.

Irritated that I walked away and still wanting a final answer from me, mum continued in a temperamental tone. "You'd better let me know by tomorrow. All dates are full already."

"I can't answer you tomorrow yet," I replied firmly but equally irritated.

Dad who was listening in, budged into the conversation casually. "This is not planning for a holiday. This is going for a holiday by force."

"Shut up lar, you!" Mum barked at dad. Poor thing.

"Don't want to go, don't go!" Mum's voice in crescendo. "Don't go! I don't want to go already!" And she reached for the remote control and increased the volume of the tv.

I was seated quietly on the sofa with Million contented on my lap. Sigh.

Disagreements, disagreements. What's wrong with people at home? Is it them, is it me or is it home? Maybe mum's just going through menopause. Bleh!

I don't want to be home.

Big eye king

I have always been the softer one, the gentler one, the girlish one, the submissive one, definitely the weaker one. Big Eye King has always been the firmest one, the strongest one, the loudest one, the roughest one, definitely the biggest bully I have ever encountered.

We would mock each other but she condescends. We would throw sarcasm at each other but she's a sarcasist (I just invented this word) expert in the crudest way. We would fling at each other in physical fights but I would end up losing. Spark and spittle fly around when we argue but she would win hands down. All my decisions will be thrown with a cold blanket and squashed with disagreeable negative comments which comes to me like a splat. Nothing I do is right in her eyes. Although there is a streak of kindness in her once in a while, nothing measures close to overshadowing that empowering cruelty in her.

Why can't anybody be kinder to mere mortals like me? But blood is thicker than water. My eldest sister probably just doesn't see things from my perspective. Though I can only have that much patience, I must always remember that patience is a virtue. I can only prove to her that life can always be better even without her and I'm working at it on my own.

Lord give me the strength to stand great nonsense from her and turn a deaf ear to whatever poison she's spitting at me.

Amen.

Note: Big Eye King is a nick given to her by my parents and it still prevails

Gong hei lei

It's the first day of Chinese New Year today but I don't hear no fire crackers nor hear no lion dances. I only hear myself munching prawn crackers and festive cookies, non-stop. Uhm, not exactly feeling all too well with the flu and cough bugs still lingering behind but oh well! La la la la la!

"Last angpau for you this year ha!"
"Err, thank you aunty."
"When will I get to yum lei geh hei jau (roughly translated as "When will I get invited to your prosperous (wedding) dinner)?"
"Err, I *sor hei already."
"You know ha, *sor hei also must cheng yum (also must invite to dinner)."
"Really?"
"Ya lar... you think you want to *sor hei, so easy ah?"

*Sor hei is literally translated as "comb up". In the olden days, maidens who do not wish to get married will tie their hair up into a chignon-bun to signify the end of single days

Gosh, and I thought an answer like that would stop them from asking me for the ###-th time each year without fail. Hmm, what other answers can I give, huh?

And guess what? While driving home on the highway, I was flagged down by the police (for speeding). Damn!

"Cik, tunjuk lesen memandu!"
*passed him my driving license*

"Cik bawa kereta 90kph. Highway ni 80kph saje."
"Oh, ya ke?"
"Ini Opsikap. Saman tak boleh kompaun, tau?"
"Tau, tuan."
*scribble scibble*

"Kereta cik dalam nama siapa?"
"Err, nama bapa, tuan."
"Oh, ingat dalam nama cik. Kalau nama cik, bolehlah saman."
*WTF? And so I got the hint*

"Err, boleh settle sini ke?"
"Suka hati cik lah."
"Nanti I settle, tuan tangkap I, macam mana?"
"I takkan tangkap cik punya."
*DUH*

"RM30 ok?"
"RM40!"

Who says OPSIKAP cannot accept bribe? Cannot my foot! They still do, ok? Mine's a good example.

Oh well, Gong hei fatt choy, san keen lek chong to everyone.

Flushed

I did a bit of blog-cleaning over the weekend and everything's back in order. Could have just flushed the whole blog down the toilet bowl but was given a warning that only streamline piss and blobbing/sinking poopsies can get in there. What else is foreign?

Update
"Whoa! What are those three signs doing here?"

"Hummphh! The toilet's been blocked twice in two weeks!"

"Really? What crawled in there?"

"Neh, por-por thought she'd save herself a few trips to the dustbin. And so she threw probably 3 days' worth of toilet paper into the toilet bowl the other day."

*gasp* "3 days??"

"And your kong-kong threw toothpicks in there while cleaning his dentures after dinner over the bowl. God knows what else got stuck in those dentures!"

And so went my conversation with mum this morning about the signs in our bathroom. So Yuen Li, you've made a very good guess. *chuckles*

Note to self: Oops, I'd better not let out that I've probably thrown dental floss and bunch of hair from hair loss after shampooing in there too. Hehe!

+++

"Hey daddy, you can't spell for nuts. What's with 'bole' and 'foriegn'?

*grumble grumble*

"I was scribbling furiously in the dark this morning. Did you know I had to flush down that toilet bowl with 4 large pails of water yesterday night because it was blocked?"

"Err, no wor. Why write 'shit' and 'urine' ah?"
*giggles*

"Sheesh! Old folks, see? Easy to understand. And you! You'd better not throw whatever strands of hair after shampooing in there."

"Err..."

+++

Tip-toed silently back to my room upstairs and end of story.

Pang phui

Told you my grandpa is funny. This was related to me by my mum this morning and it happened yesterday night when grandparents were already fast asleep in their room.

+++And so my mum narrated+++

[I went into grandparents' room to spray air freshener. Then, a few minutes later...]

Gpa: "Ah Lan ah! Ah Lan! Ah Lan ah! Ah Lan! Ah Lan!"

[I heard grandpa calling your grandma five times but you know lar, grandma is hard at hearing. Luckily she didn't wake up. So I opened their room door...]

Mum: "Cho mi su kio lu eh bor?" [Why are you calling your wife]

Gpa: "Bo, bo! Wa bee tiuk lang pang phui." [No, no! I smelt fart]

Mum: "Phui lu eh tau lar. Wa spray freshener hor lu eh lang lar." [Fart your head lah. I sprayed air freshener]

+++End+++

Primrose: *giggle giggle* "I thought you have been spraying every day. Why smelt fart only yesterday?"

Mum: "Usually I spray orange-scented freshener. Yesterday I sprayed the lemon one. It's new."

Primrose: ??

Lemon = Fart?
Freshener = Fart?

*scratch head*
*laugh out loud*

Did mum spray too much the lemon became bitter?
Or has the tin of air freshener expired?

One very obvious explanation seems to have been politely overlooked here...

Why was mum using air freshener in the first place? Something to cover up?

Maybe grandpa was right after all.

Million II

No, not a million dollars! It's my poodle, Million, my eunuch! Added a couple more dogshirts into his wardrobe recently. Mum does all the pampering. Not me.

Ah huh! Caught you in the right mood. Hmm, he doesn't seem interested but at least he entertained

Million now owns world's top soccer player Ronaldo's (No.9) Brazilian jersey too!

Bo lang

Grandpa is 85, can be a little clumsy, is extremely slow to react but widely alerted at the words pok kiau, beh ji 4D or Toto and at the sound of the ringing phone.

+++A few weeks ago+++
The postman delivering courier stopped at our gate and hooted his meek little motorcyle horn "peen, peen...peen, peen"
Gpa: Hello? Hello? Hello? Eh, bo lang eh? Aan chua bo lang eh?

Grandpa actually picked up the phone in the hall, thinking that it was the phone.

*giggle giggle*

But the horn vs the phone? *scratch head* Horn? Phone? Ok, must be his hearing.

+++Yesterday evening+++
My dad was on his ham radio in the hall upstairs as usual and the beauty (or detestable fact) of short wave? It can pick up/track/spy on other people's phone conversations within a few kilometres' radius. So dad picked up one and decided to listen in.

Ham radio: Toot, toot...toot, toot
Gpa: Hello? Hello? Hello? Eh, bo lang eh? Aan chua bo lang eh?

Grandpa picked up the phone in the hall again but this time, it's understandable since it's the sound of the phone ringing (on radio).

*dad chuckled*
*I chuckled too*

But ringing on radio vs ringing of real phone? Ok, ok, it's his hearing. He still makes me laugh.

I digress.

Short wave can only pick up calls made using cordless phones. Not mobile phones, not land lines. So far, we haven't heard one with naughty conversations yet. Maybe eavesdropper dad didn't stay late enough for those. Heh!

In the hokkien dialect:
pok kiau: gambling
beh ji: buy numbers (or lottery)
aan chua: why (how come)
bo lang: nobody

Retro Nite

Theme for the night of my dad's company annual dinner yesterday was 70s Retro Nite. Only a handful of staff dressed 70s anyway. Thank goodness, I wouldn't have had any 70s-styled clothing. I neither own polka-dotted skirts nor large bell botts nor fancy putting on a wig. And I didn't have time to buy satin ribbons for my hair as I was working that weekend. So what the heck, just wear another cheong sam! It's evergreen anyway.

That's demure me, hawtt mum and fashionable younger sis - we happened to be wearing the black & white theme on Retro Nite

My eunuch

I met ML for lunch today and shortly after lunch...

ML: Is your dog castrated?
P: Yes. Million is a eunuch. *silly grin*
ML: *wicked laugh* A eunuch.
P: [...]
ML: So that he can play with the princEss?

*a second of silence*
*broke into laughter*

P: Hey, I have never thought of it that way. Yes, yes! Only a eunuch can play with a princess in the olden days, hoh? *gives ML a punch*
ML: Yeah, since you claimed to be a princEss... *trailed off*
P: Hahaha! I'll make sure I blog this
ML: *tsk* You and your blog...

Hence this blog - at the expense of my darling little Million.

Million

My cute little toy poodle. My mum bought him 3 dogshirts and they were all about the same size of what a 5-month old baby would wear. It came with a little hanger too, to hang it out in the sun after the wash or simply to hang it in the dog wardrobe. Maybe we should get him shoes later. *hiaks*

That's cute little Million with a dogshirt

Isn't he just so adorable?

Million is a Liverpool fan!

He's not interested with food just yet. He's watching his favourite footie team on TV. *hiaks*
