Bo lang

Grandpa is 85, can be a little clumsy, is extremely slow to react but widely alerted at the words pok kiau, beh ji 4D or Toto and at the sound of the ringing phone.

+++A few weeks ago+++
The postman delivering courier stopped at our gate and hooted his meek little motorcyle horn "peen, peen...peen, peen"
Gpa: Hello? Hello? Hello? Eh, bo lang eh? Aan chua bo lang eh?

Grandpa actually picked up the phone in the hall, thinking that it was the phone.

*giggle giggle*

But the horn vs the phone? *scratch head* Horn? Phone? Ok, must be his hearing.

+++Yesterday evening+++
My dad was on his ham radio in the hall upstairs as usual and the beauty (or detestable fact) of short wave? It can pick up/track/spy on other people's phone conversations within a few kilometres' radius. So dad picked up one and decided to listen in.

Ham radio: Toot, toot...toot, toot
Gpa: Hello? Hello? Hello? Eh, bo lang eh? Aan chua bo lang eh?

Grandpa picked up the phone in the hall again but this time, it's understandable since it's the sound of the phone ringing (on radio).

*dad chuckled*
*I chuckled too*

But ringing on radio vs ringing of real phone? Ok, ok, it's his hearing. He still makes me laugh.

I digress.

Short wave can only pick up calls made using cordless phones. Not mobile phones, not land lines. So far, we haven't heard one with naughty conversations yet. Maybe eavesdropper dad didn't stay late enough for those. Heh!

In the hokkien dialect:
pok kiau: gambling
beh ji: buy numbers (or lottery)
aan chua: why (how come)
bo lang: nobody
