Outback

My very first Outback experience was in Australia while I was there studying a few years back. BBQ dishes were great and steaks were thick, juicy and yummy! Then the first outlet in KL came about at the BB Park boulevard facing Low Yat Plaza. Call me a lazy bum but I never actually went there to try because I consider walking there too far from Sungei Wang.

And then there came a new outlet at Bangsar Village. That was when I decided to try. Man, my experience there wasn't exactly a good one. Apart from good appetisers to start off with (cheesy cheese fries and bushman shrooms are good orders), main meals sucked. The gravy on the braised sirloin tasted like it came from a can of Campbells oxtail soup and the meat was soft but tasteless. The salmon of the salmon steak was dry, over-grilled, fishy and not fresh. The lamb steak or was it some lamb ribs was under-cooked with lots of untrimmed fats and had a burnt taste. Oh my! 2 visits and that puts me off Outback Steakhouse.

However today, sis suggested that we stop being lazy, walk a wee bit and try the other outlet in KL and see if I was right. If it sucks, that's it. We're blacklisting Outback from our restaurant list. Okie dokes. Walk we will, try we shall.

The menu

Bushman shrooms was a yummy appetizer dish. Deep fried fresh mushrooms with a dip. It's got quite a bit of mushrooms too. We already ate half of it before I stopped my sister from digging in further so that I have enough left to take this shot. Only thing was the dip. Too much of it. Err, you think they "recycle" leftover dips? By the way, T.G.I Friday's serves the same appetizer (called Friday's mushrooms) but have only about 10-12 miserable mushrooms deep fried with lots of batter. Nice nonetheless. Just not enough to whet a mushroom lover's appetite.

Sis had a chicken salad (think it's called Queensland chicken salad). Verdict? Nicer than the chicken salad served at Chili's. See those crouton-looking bits? They were crisply garlic toasts in bite sizes. *crunch crunch*

I had the Alice Springs chicken - grilled breast meat smothered with cheesy cheese - served with corn, mash, some buttered rice and honey mustard sauce. It looked yummy. Tasted yummy too! Mash (with bits of skin) was superb but the rice was slightly bland.

Ok, this may look slightly queasy but hey! Lift the top layer of cheesy cheese off the grilled chicken and you find this underneath - layers of (more) grilled fresh mushrooms AND slices of beef bacon. There's no way I could start counting calories today. Heh!

Sis, with a sideway peace sign and sideway glance enthusiastically say "we'll come back!"

I, with a tired look and bags under the eyes sleepily replied "as long as you don't drag me out of bed too early for steak."

This meal was good. Maybe that was because it was a chicken dish. We'll definitely return to try the beef and salmon dishes next time. For those who wants to try Outback, this would be a better outlet (with a better chef) to go to. Forget Bangsar Village unless you're going there for drinks/munchies/appetisers/side orders only. Heh!

FFL: Haha! And it's summer now isn't it?

Mama Bok: Portions are never too huge here though. Just right for some greedy pig like me. *slurp slurp* I love mushroooooms: crispy on the outside and succulent in the inside!

arglene: Do you like button mushrooms? Can start off with those first if you're experimenting. They're nice and cute.

Only tried Outback once and was in Spore. Near Suntec City Mall. Food was pretty good as I remembered. Stylo-milo sis you got there, Primrose
